Councillor Joseph Persechini is serving in his first term as a Town Councillor with the Town of East Gwillimbury.
In 1975 he started a very successful fitness centre and managed it for 40 years growing it from 5000 square feet to 30,000 square feet, serving over 3000 members. In 1976 Joe initiated the 10-km Run/Walkathon for Easter Seals which over 40 years has raised more than $3 million to support physically disabled children and their families. He has a strong business management and community service background that will guide his decisions as he represents the residents of East Gwillimbury.
In this term of Council, Councillor Persechini will chair when Council deals with matters of Corporate Services. He is also the Council liaison to the Sharon Temple, the Accessibility Advisory Committee, the North Union Community Recreation Centre Committee and the Environmental Advisory Committee.
Councillor Persechini was presented with the Governor General’s Caring Award for community service in 1999 and the Queen’s Jubilee Medal in 2002. He has received many citations and awards for his outstanding community service in York Region including being the chair to the Southlake Regional Health Centre’s Fundraising campaign in 2005 that raised $1.8 million towards rebuilding the Whipper Billy Watson physiotherapy pool. Councillor Persechini also served on the York Region Police Services Board from 2004-2010, and spent the last 3 years as Vice-Chair. He lives in East Gwillimbury and is the proud father of Marla and Lana and four grandchildren, Ben, Emma, Sara and Brian. Joe lost his beloved wife of 46 years, Rosalie, in March 2015.
